Biomes of the World in Action is a fun, informative series that
takes students on a fast-paced eco-adventure around the world
exploring the many characteristics that make these large regions
of the world different from each other. From the tundra and
rainforest to coniferous and deciduous forests, grasslands and
deserts, students will learn that each biome is unique because
of its climate as well as the diversity of plant and animal
species. Stunning footage will help students experience these
“major life zones.” Each program includes a stimulating experiment
that students can replicate in the classroom, as well as an
investigation data sheet that can be used for assessment purposes.
This series is based on the concepts outlined in the National
Science Education Standards for Life Science.

Coniferous forests are found mainly within the Northern Hemisphere.
These forests are made up of mainly cone-bearing trees such as
pines, firs and spruces. Learn why their needles seem to keep
the forests green all year long. Study the kinds of creatures
that inhabit this environment such as the moose, the brown bear
and different types of deer. A hands-on activity is included.

Deciduous forests change with the seasons as they are made up of
trees that shed their leaves every fall. With strong oaks, birch
and other trees - deciduous forests are home to deer, bears and
squirrels. The decaying leaves enrich the soil providing new
life for the spring and summer months. Most of these colorful,
woodland areas are found in Europe, China and eastern North America.
Learn about the many different types of plants and animals that
inhabit these areas, and discover why migration, hibernation and
dormancy are important for them. Includes an interactive experiment
that demonstrates these key concepts. 23 minutes.

Covered with sand and a low water supply, the desert still supports
cactus and other life forms. In all this desolation, it is amazing
how anything can exist in these conditions but even humans have
adapted to life in the deserts of the world. Learn more about how
the desert has sustained these life forms with rich soil and unique
water storage methods. Also find out about the many different types
of deserts and how they vary from other biomes. A hands-on experiment
is included. 23 minutes.

Grasslands are areas with lots of grasses, low rainfall and very
few trees. Find out how brush fires and seasonal drought help
maintain a perfect home for a variety of organisms by keeping
the grass at a low level. Learn about prairies, savannas and
steppes and how each is unique in their support of animal life.

Located throughout the Caribbean, Africa and South America,
rainforests are as important to the rest of the world as they
are to its inhabitants. Home to various birds, monkeys, insects
and more, rainforests provide us with an incredible amount of
oxygen due to their intense heat and rainfall. Find out about
how the rainforest dwellers have adapted to the various levels
of heat, temperature and vegetation. Learn more about why the
rainforests are in danger and how they affect all of our lives.
