Cinco de Mayo (the Fifth of May) is the celebration of Mexico's military victory over the French in 1862. This program highlights the history, preparations and festivities surrounding the holiday, and features the spirited sounds of a traditional Mexican mariachi band performing Mexican folk songs. Children also learn about the Mayan story of creation, and they are shown how to make their own maracas from everyday objects to re-create the sounds of Cinco de Mayo throughout the year. Part of the multivolume Holidays for Children DVD Series. A teacher's guide is included and is available online.

"... this long-awaited video series which introduces children to holidays in America and around the globe is highly recommended." - Video Librarian (Jan/Feb 1995)

"The series explores and explains the symbols, customs, rituals and folklore underlying our major holidays...Public and school library collections will be enhanced by this contemporary look at these celebrations...an excellent introduction for young children." - School Library Journal (Feb 1995)

"...this series recognizes the spiritual roots and secular customs of each notable observance. These are welcome videos that don't revisit the well-trod paths of other holiday titles." - Booklist (March 1, 1995)
