PRODUCT SUMMARY
Contemporary realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, horror -- which is your favorite? Join our hosts as they investigate some of fiction's most popular genres while emphasizing that knowing the genre of a text helps libraries, writers and readers to organize, think about and compare works of literature. The characteristics, common themes and popular subgenres of each genre are highlighted. Students will discover that while some texts clearly fit into one genre or another, others aren't quite so easy to categorize. Many authors create works that weave in elements of multiple genres. By knowing more about fiction's genres, students can predict certain things about a book, connect the book to other works of fiction and develop a deeper understanding of the text. Part of the multivolume Literature for Students DVD Series. A teacher's guide is included and available online.

School Library Journal (February 2008)
Gr 5-9-Featuring a minimalist, distraction-free TV-show format, the series examines the elements of literature in all genres. Three diverse, fresh-faced hosts take turns leading students through the landscape of literary terms with examples and excerpts drawn from the best of classic and contemporary YA literature, from Robert Service's The Cremation of Sam McGee (Kids Can Press, 2006) to Surviving the Applewhites (HarperCollins, 2002) by Stephanie Tolan. The tone of the production is warm and intimate, and the pace and editing are lively enough to engage students. The host/narrators reflect on some of their favorite books, while clips of book recommendations from middle-school students are interspersed. The DVDs also feature a dubbed Spanish-language track, chapter selection, and on-screen discussion questions. Perfect for English or library classes.
