PRODUCT SUMMARY

Plants can survive in even the harshest of environments, from the freezing Arctic to the arid desert. In All About Plant Adaptation, join young plant lovers as they uncover some of the amazing ways that plants have adapted over millions of years enabling them to survive almost anywhere on Earth. Discover how some plants living in cold, arctic climates or dry, arid regions have adapted by remaining inactive or dormant for long periods of time. Examine how some plants have evolved to survive under the lush, thick canopy of the rainforest. Find out how epiphytes, like some orchids, are able to obtain their water and nutrients right out of the air! Learn about other ways that plants have adapted either to protect themselves from predators or to help them reproduce to ensure their survival. A hands-on experiment that explores how the Venus flytrap has adapted to survive in mineral-free water is also included. This title correlates to the National Science Education Standards for Life Science -- characteristics of organisms, life cycles of organisms and organisms & environments. One of five volumes in the Plant Life for Children Video Series in the Schlessinger Science Library. Part of the Schlessinger Science Library for Children Collection. This title includes a Teacher's Guide featuring additional information on the topic, vocabulary words, discussion questions, follow-up activities and lists of recommended books and Internet resources.

Why is Venus, Dusty's favorite plant, so sick? It's a case for his friends in M.A.P.L.E. (the Marvelous Association of Plant Loving Enthusiasts) to solve in All About Plant Adaptation, one of four titles in the Plant Life for Children series. As each of the members, who live around the country, research and compare notes via computer, they (and we) learn all about plant adaptation in relation to climate, locale, nutritional needs, protection and pollination. From the desert to the bogs, from a suburban backyard to a steamy orchid greenhouse, the M.A.P.L.E. kids eventually discover that Venus flytraps cannot use mineral water due to generational adaptation, and conduct a structured scientific experiment to prove it. The production values are excellent, the all-kid narrated script is entertaining as well as chockfull of information, the format is attention-grabbing and clever, and the price is right. Highly recommended. The other titles in the series are: All About Caring for Plants, All About Plant & Animal Interdependency, All About Plant Pollination: Fruit, Flowers & Seeds and All About Plant Structure & Growth.

K-Gr 4 - This live-action series focuses on plants and their importance to life on earth. The videos are narrated by adolescents belonging to a group called MAPLE (Marvelous Association of Plant-Loving Enthusiasts). These children use scientific inquiry to learn more about plants. Viewers are taught what plants need to thrive, how plants propagate and grow, how they adapt to new environments, and the importance of plants in the food chain. The multiethnic cast visits adult plant specialists and scientists to learn more. Each video features an experiment that illustrates important points. Scientific procedure is modeled, and note-taking is encouraged. Problem-solving is clearly demonstrated. Plants that fit the rules are profiled, as well as those that do not, offering opportunities for comparison and contrast. Many new vocabulary words are introduced, which are clearly defined in context. There is some overlap between the videos, which helps reinforce key concepts. Each production ends with a short rap song that also serves as a review. Both video and audio quality is excellent. Pacing is brisk, but not rushed. This exceptional series teaches basic plant science in a clear and interesting manner and would be an asset to any video collection for elementary students.
