School Library Journal (October 2000)
K-Gr 4 - This live-action series focuses on plants and their importance to life on earth. The videos are narrated by adolescents belonging to a group called MAPLE (Marvelous Association of Plant-Loving Enthusiasts). These children use scientific inquiry to learn more about plants. Viewers are taught what plants need to thrive, how plants propagate and grow, how they adapt to new environments, and the importance of plants in the food chain. The multiethnic cast visits adult plant specialists and scientists to learn more. Each video features an experiment that illustrates important points. Scientific procedure is modeled, and note-taking is encouraged. Problem-solving is clearly demonstrated. Plants that fit the rules are profiled, as well as those that do not, offering opportunities for comparison and contrast. Many new vocabulary words are introduced, which are clearly defined in context. There is some overlap between the videos, which helps reinforce key concepts. Each production ends with a short rap song that also serves as a review. Both video and audio quality is excellent. Pacing is brisk, but not rushed. This exceptional series teaches basic plant science in a clear and interesting manner and would be an asset to any video collection for elementary students.
