PRODUCT SUMMARY

From a tiny puddle to a neighborhood pond to a huge ocean, there are plenty of different water ecosystems found around the world. In All About Water Ecosystems, young viewers will explore freshwater ecosystems such as ponds and rivers, as well as marine ecosystems like coral reefs and the open ocean. They will learn that the animal and plant life found in water ecosystems make up communities that are as complex as they are beautiful. A hands-on experiment demonstrates what happens when pollutants get into ponds and lakes, while a visit with a marine biologist examines the oyster population of the Chesapeake Bay. One of three volumes in the Ecosystems for Children Video Series in the Schlessinger Science Library. Part of the Schlessinger Science Library for Children Collection. This title is based on the concepts outlined in the National Science Education Standards for Life Science: characteristics of organisms, life cycles of organisms and organisms & environments. This title includes a Teacher's Guide.

School Library Journal (September 2001)

K-Gr 4 - These live-action videos take a multiethnic group of children on an exploration of ecosystems. A female narrator leads the way, with other voices chiming in occasionally. The characteristics and locations of each ecosystem are clearly explained and important terms, such as "habitat" and "niche," are defined as needed. Some of the plants and animals found in each ecosystem are introduced, and their interrelationships and adaptations are shown. The importance of each ecosystem is clearly explained, and environmental issues are explored. Each video includes a science experiment to reinforce key concepts, as well as a brief review of important points. All About Deserts & Grasslands features deserts around the world and explores how plants and animals adapt, and what people do to modify these environments. All About Forest Ecosystems examines rainforests, deciduous forests, and coniferous forests. All About Water Ecosystems introduces marine and freshwater ecosystems, as well as those that are a mixture of the two, such as gulfs and bays. Coral reefs, marine mammals, and land animals that depend on these ecosystems are briefly introduced. Pacing and organization are excellent, as is both audio and video quality. This exceptional series will be a valuable introduction to an important topic.
