PRODUCT SUMMARY

In All About Forest Ecosystems, kids will explore the ecosystems where trees are the major plant life form. Viewers will discover the three different types of forests found around the world (rainforests, deciduous forests and coniferous forests) and explore the plant and animal life found there. A fun, hands-on experiment illustrates why rainforest soil is so poor in nutrients, while a visit with a scientist examines one of the world's most famous predators -- the boa constrictor! One of three volumes in the Ecosystems for Children Video Series in the Schlessinger Science Library. Part of the Schlessinger Science Library for Children Collection. This title is based on the concepts outlined in the National Science Education Standards for Life Science: characteristics of organisms, life cycles of organisms and organisms & environments. This title includes a Teacher's Guide.

Video Librarian (September 2001)

""

“If an ecosystem is a neighborhood, think of a habitat as a house,” young viewers are informed in the kid-friendly All About Forest Ecosystems, one of three titles in the Ecosystems for Children series. Discussing tropical, deciduous and coniferous forests in equally simple ways, the program introduces children to forest animals and their ecosystems, with thought-provoking segments on where certain animals might live and why (considering the animals’ fur length, tail, etc.), as well as a close up and personal visit with a huge boa constrictor! Taped on location in Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland, the three forest ecosystems receive solid coverage here that meets the specifications set forward in the National Science Education Standards. Along with the companion volumes All About Deserts and Grasslands and All About Water Ecosystems, this one's a winner and highly recommended.

School Library Journal (September 2001)

K-Gr 4 - These live-action videos take a multiethnic group of children on an exploration of ecosystems. A female narrator leads the way, with other voices chiming in occasionally. The characteristics and locations of each ecosystem are clearly explained and important terms, such as "habitat" and "niche," are defined as needed. Some of the plants and animals found in each ecosystem are introduced, and their interrelationships and adaptations are shown. The importance of each ecosystem is clearly explained, and environmental issues are explored. Each video includes a science experiment to reinforce key concepts, as well as a brief review of important points. All About Deserts & Grasslands features deserts around the world and explores how plants and animals adapt, and what people do to modify these environments. All About Forest Ecosystems examines rainforests, deciduous forests, and coniferous forests. All About Water Ecosystems introduces marine and freshwater ecosystems, as well as those that are a mixture of the two, such as gulfs and bays. Coral reefs, marine mammals, and land animals that depend on these ecosystems are briefly introduced. Pacing and organization are excellent, as is both audio and video quality. This exceptional series will be a valuable introduction to an important topic.
