PRODUCT SUMMARY

Do you wear a seatbelt in the car? Always don a helmet to go biking? Then you're off to a great start following safety rules -- an important responsibility! From avoiding chemicals in household products, to using electricity safely, to planning for fire safety, Safety Awareness provides students with tips for basic safety practices in all kinds of situations. Young viewers take a look at the role of the 911 dispatcher in an emergency and are reminded when to dial the number for help. Kids model important safety gear for all of your favorite sports, and viewers learn rules for special situations like being home alone. When you follow the safety rules, you're choosing to keep yourself -- and everyone around you -- as safe as possible! Part of the multivolume Health for Children Video Series.
A teacher's guide is included and available online.

K-Gr 4-Each program focuses on a different area of wellness, and points out how good choices can lead to good habits. The multiethnic cast uses vignettes, discussion, and example to show ways in which viewers can promote their own health and well-being. In Safety Awareness, basic safety rules are covered for fire safety, poisons, electricity, being home alone, and transportation. A fashion show features safe sports attire. Viewers are also given information on when it is appropriate to call 911. Personal Health and Hygiene discusses physical fitness (including warm-ups and cool-downs), and general health issues-cleanliness; tooth, eye, and ear care; sleep; nutrition; and the importance of using sunscreen. Decisions and Conflicts outlines the decision-making process and teaches conflict-resolution. It discusses peer pressure (both positive and negative), and gives information on dealing with bullying. In Nutrition, food groups are presented, and their role in good health is explored. Viewers are encouraged to read nutrition labels, eat healthy snacks and a good breakfast, and exercise. Food allergies and safe food-handling rules are also presented. Dealing with Feelings examines anger, fear, sadness, stress, worry, and jealousy. Youngsters are urged to share their feelings and talk things over with a trusted adult. Strong family ties are encouraged, and self-esteem is emphasized. The remaining two programs were not reviewed. Each program includes a review of all key points. The pacing is brisk, and the subject matter is important. A valuable series for health education.
