From Constantinople -- the “new Rome” -- the Byzantine Empire’s political and economic power extended from Spain over Mesopotamia and Asia to Egypt. Students will learn of the ensuing rift with the Roman Catholic Church in 1054, which spawned the establishment of the Eastern Christian Church, a division in Europe that still exists today. The Byzantine Empire lasted more than 1,000 years, but greatly weakened by vicious crusader attacks, the city of Constantinople eventually fell to Ottoman armies.
