 (1821-1912) Named "the angel of the battlefield" by thankful surgeons, Clara Barton claimed a place in history by going to battlefields to nurse wounded Union soldiers during the Civil War. Her humanitarian efforts did not stop there, however. She dedicated the rest of her life to found the American Red Cross, an organization that helps people in times of dire emergencies.
