Once the most populous and powerful tribe in the Northeast with ancestry dating back 10,000 years, the Narragansett lived in what is now southern Rhode Island. The tribe traded with Europeans, but when the supply of fur-bearing animals was depleted, they were forced to sell their land. They joined forces with the Wampanoag to wage war with the colonists, but after a year, less than 200 tribe members survived. The Narragansett later reorganized, reclaiming 1,800 acres, and they were officially recognized by the U.S. government in 1983. Today, the tribe educates their children about the tribal heritage and about being part of a larger community. Part of the multivolume Indians of North America Video Collection, each featuring the compelling history and culture of a particular Native American tribe.

"...viewers get a chance to see cultural practices and hear native languages that contemporary Native Americans are struggling to save from extinction...these would be a boon to school and public libraries...recommended." - Video Librarian

"The producers have done an admirable job of creating a series of videos whose structure and content parallel each other. Individuals or groups of students could use a video to write reports or make presentations to the class." - School Library Journal

"Intriguingly presenting the lifestyle, culture, and history of various Native American tribes...given a sense of immediacy through its many fascinating interviews... vivid and very positive portraits of Native Americans' histories and traditions." - Booklist
