The Aztec, who referred to themselves as the "Mexica," are the amazing ancient peoples whose civilization reached its height during the 16th century. The Aztec spoke related languages, shared similar customs, fought wars and formed alliances. Their engineering skills, trade practices, religion, government and social structure made them one of the most advanced societies of their time. In 1519, Spaniard Hernan Cortes arrived with his troops and took control of the entire Aztec empire. Changes to the Aztec society occurred quickly as disease reduced the Indian population and intermarriage blended cultures; however, many descendants of the great Aztec empire still populate Mexico today. Part of the multivolume Indians of North America Video Collection, each featuring the compelling history and culture of a particular Native American tribe.

"...viewers get a chance to see cultural practices and hear native languages that contemporary Native Americans are struggling to save from extinction...these would be a boon to school and public libraries...recommended." - Video Librarian

"The producers have done an admirable job of creating a series of videos whose structure and content parallel each other. Individuals or groups of students could use a video to write reports or make presentations to the class." - School Library Journal

"Intriguingly presenting the lifestyle, culture, and history of various Native American tribes...given a sense of immediacy through its many fascinating interviews... vivid and very positive portraits of Native Americans' histories and traditions." - Booklist
