 It is difficult to imagine a time in modern democratic societies when all adults were not permitted to cast a ballot. However, only 100 years ago, women voters did not exist in most countries around the world. Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst endured a long and sometimes brutal struggle against resistant British lawmakers to win women the right to vote. Refusing to back down despite arrest and imprisonment, Pankhurst's articulate and compelling voice gave structure and credibility to the movement, and inspired thousands to engage in massive civil disobedience campaigns to achieve their political rights.
