Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler and Viggo Mortensen star in this epic adventure directed by Peter Jackson. This second part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy begins with the Hobbits Frodo and Sam discovering that they are being followed by Gollum -- a creature who has also been consumed by the Ring. Gollum promises to guide the Hobbits to the Mordor if they will release him. Sam does not trust Gollum, but Frodo takes pity on him -- and Gollum is allowed to travel with them. Across Middle Earth, Aragorn and Gimli encounter the besieged Rohan kingdom. Here, the once-great King Theoden has fallen under Saruman's spell. Gandalf is reborn as Gandalf the White and reminds Aragorn of his destiny to unite the Rohan people with Gondor, and they work together to break Theoden from his spell. The Fellowship must stand against the forces spreading from the Two Towers -- Orthanc Tower in Isengard, where the corrupted wizard, Saruman, has bred a lethal army 10,000 strong; and Sauron's fortress at Barad-dûr, deep within the dark lands of Mordor. Produced by Peter Jackson, Barrie M. Osborne and Frances Walsh. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic epic.
