Set against the backdrop of Victorian England, the story tells the tragic tale of Hardy's famous heroine Tess Durbeyfield. When her poor country family learns of their noble lineage, Tess is sent to make an appeal to a nearby wealthy family who bear the ancestral name of d'Urberville.
