Nineteenth-century smokestacks were once a symbol of progress in America. Their legacy, however, is the very serious problem of air pollution. Additionally, the rising number of automobiles has contributed to the dangerous levels of pollution in the air we breathe. This program examines those environmental pollutants, including ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and lead, as well as indoor pollutants such as tobacco smoke, formaldehyde and asbestos. Electric cars are also presented as a new option providing more environmentally safe and fuel-efficient forms of transportation.
