PRODUCT SUMMARY

For sale in U.S. and Canada only-- Meet Loumka, a 12-year-old member of the Xhosa people of South Africa. Because her mother lives and works far away, Loumka lives in a one-room house with her grandmother, aunt, sister and two cousins. Her grandfather lives next door with his second wife, whom Loumka considers a second grandmother. Together, they work hard picking vegetables, preparing meals and making straw mats on which to sit and sleep. Join Loumka and her family at a festive ceremony honoring their ancestors, complete with story telling, dancing and a customary meal. A Teacher's Guide is included and available online.

Part of the multivolume Families Around the World Video Series.

EDITORIAL REVIEWS

"The importance of family and cultural heritage is stressed...this glimpse into other children's lives is interesting and would provide excellent compare/contrast opportunities..."- School Library Journal (Sept 2003)
