PRODUCT SUMMARY
How does a tiny seed sprout and grow into a towering tree? Join the kids from M.A.P.L.E as they learn about some of the incredible transformations that a plant goes through during its lifetime. In All About Plant Structure & Growth, uncover the secrets of roots, stems and leaves -- structures that are vital to a plant’s role as an energy producer. Find out how water and minerals flow from the roots through the stem and into the leaves through special tissue called xylem. Discover how a plant manufactures sugars in its leaves and then transfers it to the rest of the plant through the phloem. Uncover facts about a plant’s root system -- the structure used to anchor a plant in the soil and take in water and minerals. Learn how to identify different types of leaves -- simple, compound and needle. A hands-on experiment in which kids prove that xylem tissue flows through all parts of a plant is also included. This title correlates to the National Science Education Standards for Life Science -- characteristics of organisms, life cycles of organisms and organisms & environments. K-Gr 4 - This live-action series focuses on plants and their importance to life on earth. The videos are narrated by adolescents belonging to a group called MAPLE (Marvelous Association of Plant-Loving Enthusiasts). These children use scientific inquiry to learn more about plants. Viewers are taught what plants need to thrive, how plants propagate and grow, how they adapt to new environments, and the importance of plants in the food chain. The multiethnic cast visits adult plant specialists and scientists to learn more. Each video features an experiment that illustrates important points. Scientific procedure is modeled, and note-taking is encouraged. Problem-solving is clearly demonstrated. Plants that fit the rules are profiled, as well as those that do not, offering opportunities for comparison and contrast. Many new vocabulary words are introduced, which are clearly defined in context. There is some overlap between the videos, which helps reinforce key concepts. Each production ends with a short rap song that also serves as a review. Both video and audio quality is excellent. Pacing is brisk, but not rushed. This exceptional series teaches basic plant science in a clear and interesting manner and would be an asset to any video collection for elementary students.
