Gr 4-8-In this fine entry in Tim Podell's engaging series, Katherine Paterson proves to be a lively interviewee discussing her works and showing off her home. Paterson gives a tour of her quiet New England town, and introduces her husband, who collects art. The program's highlights include Paterson reading from her novel, Preacher's Boy, humorously revealing how winning two Newbery awards has changed her life, and describing her creative process (she writes the first draft longhand, then edits subsequent drafts on the computer). What comes through on this tape is Paterson's unflinching honesty as she reveals the inspiration for her major novels (for example, she wrote The Great Gilly Hopkins because she felt she had made a less-than-perfect foster mother). Paterson offers her views on the Internet and technology, being a grandmother, the benefits of childhood play, and how she considers herself blessed because she loves being a writer. Unfortunately, the issue of censorship and Paterson's novel, The Bridge to Terebithia, is never discussed. It would have been interesting to have heard her comments. This quibble aside, this beautifully edited visit with Katherine Paterson is interesting and valuable. Young viewers will gain a deeper understanding of a writer who truly loves the world of books, and wishes to inspire youngsters to create their own literary works.-Brian E.
