| | | | | | Widely known as the "Lords of the Southern Plains," the Comanche lived in arbors and tipis, in bands comprised of several extended families. They used natural resources extensively, and after the arrival of Spanish explorers, became hunters, skilled at capturing, domesticating and riding horses. The Comanche soon dominated a whole region dubbed "the Comancheria," which included parts of what are now Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. By the 1800s, Europeans and Mexicans weakened the Comanche in trade and battle, while the onslaught of smallpox further decreased their population. Today, modern Comanche hold pow-wows to rekindle interest in native dances, song, language, crafts and history. Part of the multivolume Indians of North America Video Collection, each featuring the compelling history and culture of a particular Native American tribe. | " ...viewers get a chance to see cultural practices and hear native languages that contemporary Native Americans are struggling to save from extinction...these would be a boon to school and public libraries...recommended." - Video Librarian
