(1937-Present) Colin Powell was born in Harlem, the son of Jamaican-born immigrants. He entered the military shortly after President Truman ordered total desegregation of the armed forces. By 1980, he became a brigadier general, and in 1983, Senior Military Assistant to the Defense Secretary. During the Bush administration, Powell was promoted to Four Star General and Commander of All Army Troops in the continental United States. In 1989, he oversaw the invasion of Panama and became a household name during the Persian Gulf War. Powell's career demonstrates that there are no ceilings for those who prepare themselves with persistence for higher positions. Part of the Black Americans of Achievement Video Collection that celebrates the most influential African Americans in history. |
