Power Boolean Search Tips
This search is intended for users who are familiar with free-form Boolean search techniques and
prefer the additional control that is achievable through this type of search.
Boolean Operators
The following operators work with a Boolean Search. Note that operators are case-sensitive
and must be entered as such in order to produce results.
Operator
Action
| AND |
Items matching search contain all search terms or phrases specified. For example, cat AND hat
will find all items containing both "cat" and "hat."
If you do not specify a keyword, AND is used by default. |
| OR |
Items matching search contain any search terms or phrases specified. For example, welles OR cotten
will find all items containing either "welles" or "cotten."
| NOT |
Acts as a delimiter for the search terms or phrases. For example, kennedy NOT john
will find all items containing "kennedy" but not "john."
Wildcards
Wildcard characters may also be used in a Boolean Search to specify an unknown character or characters.
Wildcard
Action
| ? |
Replaces a single character in a search string. For example, wom?n
will return items containing "woman" or "women".
| * |
Replaces multiple characters in a search string. For example, *constitution*
will return items containing "constitution", "constitutional", "unconstitutional", etc.
Double Quotes
Multiple-word phrases may be contained in double quotes so they are interpreted as a single search term, similar to using AND. For example, a search on
"Joseph Campbell" will return all items containing that phrase.
Parentheses
Search phrases and keywords may be combined with parentheses to perform complex searches. For example,
literature AND ((fitzgerald OR poe) NOT (gatsby OR raven))
will return all items matching those requirements.

Search Modifiers
Grade Range
A Grade Range can be set to limit search results. For example, if you are looking for a
program for a 5th grade class, you may want to enter grades 4 to 6 as your range.
The default is Pre-Kindergarten through Adults.
Media Type
You may select from the different media types available.
Choices include All Media, Video, All CD-ROM, DOS CD-ROM, Windows 3.x CD-ROM, Win 95 CD-ROM, Macintosh CD-ROM, DVD,
Audiocassette, Activities and Laserdisc. The default is All Media.

Results Modifiers
Results Per Page
Select how many items you want listed per page. If you have a fast Internet connection, you may want
to see more results per page, or if you wish to print out your results list, you may want all
of the items on one page. Please note that selecting a high number of results per page can create a very large
download.
Sort
The default sort uses an algorithmic model for keyword/subject relevance. However, you may change the sort for any search using this feature. In addition, you will be able to sort from the results page on Title (alpha), Price and Media Type. To change sort options in advance of your search, select either Title of the product, the Price of the product, the Media type, and Showing New titles first, Ascending order starts at low values (0 for numbers or a for letters) and ranges to high values, while descending starts at high values and ranges to low values. For relevance, the higher the value, the more relevant it is to your search, so descending is the default search order.
